Geology and Geophysics Admissions

Applications are encouraged from all qualified individuals. Some general guidelines are as given below:

M.S. and Ph.D. programs

A prior M.S. is not a prerequisite to apply as a Ph.D. student. Students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. degree should apply to the Ph.D. program.

Baccalaureate degree

A Bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite. Most applicants have a degree in one of the following disciplines: geology/geophysics, physics, chemistry, mathematics or engineering.

Course prerequisites

The minimum coursework needed to apply is 12 hours of calculus and differential equations plus 8 hours of calculus-based physics. Most applicants have courses in basic chemistry and computer programming as well.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

There is no minimum GPA to be considered as an applicant. However, most incoming students have GPAs well above 3.00.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE)

There is no minimum GRE score to apply. As a reference point, most incoming graduate classes have average GRE scores (quantitative + verbal) well above 1200.

Letters of recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required. The recommendation letters are important: choose recommenders who can adequately and fairly assess your potential, both as a student and a researcher.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

International applicants whose native language is not English must take the TOEFL. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or 230 (computer-based) is required.
